Who wins the race for knowledge-based competitiveness? Comparing European and North American FDI patterns

Abstract The geographical dispersion of value-added activities triggered by the ‘great unbundling’ production has made race for competitiveness increasingly shaped capability multinational corporations (MNCs) to orchestrate global innovation networks at world scale. However, major differences in distribution foreign investments across value chain functions undertaken MNCs based different economic areas have drawn little attention empirical literature. This work attempts fill this gap focusing on FDI patterns European and North American MNCs, which historically played a key role internationalization innovation. To aim, we compare outward flows manufacturing knowledge-intensive over period 2003–2017. We show that while are players production, they do not reach heights investors knowledge-based activities. Most importantly, rely emerging economies more offshore than set up R&D labs these countries; contrast, US-based prone engage FDIs towards most dynamic countries (especially China India, as well Four Asian Tigers). Further, account growing new entrants markets comparing advanced economies’ investment decisions with those from Chinese MNCs. Drawing literature globalization cross-border knowledge transmission, discussion is finally offered potential implications detected patterns, together possible directions future research.
